Leaking urine when exercising or coughing/sneezing/laughing, painful urination, painful intercourse, Feelings of pelvic heaviness, Back pain, Pubic pain, Diastasis Recti or separation of your Abdominals
LEADING TO:
Embarrassment, frustration, anxiety, weight changes from avoiding exercise, marital problems, further damage and possibly surgery if left untreated
After having two children myself, I remember thinking how difficult it was to find my pelvic floor and abdominals after childbirth (and I’m a PT, so I can only imagine how other women must feel).
I’ve seen how pelvic floor dysfunction can rightly occur by going back to exercising too quickly, or by having even some minor issues during childbirth. And I’ve seen too many women give up hope of exercising or even sexual intercourse because of their pelvic floor dysfunction.
For over 15 years now, I’ve been asking all of my patients about pelvic floor symptoms because, while the common approach to treating female orthopedic patients does otherwise, I’ve found low back dysfunction is often corrected by treating the pelvic floor first. Pelvic floor physical therapy can be very helpful in correcting many of the above mentioned symptoms.
One of my specialties that I love to help women with is assisting them with getting back into their lifestyle and fitness programs with decreased pain, leaking and other pelvic floor symptoms. Many women go back to exercise very quickly postpartum and I find that their body is not ready for certain types of exercises, but with direction, re-education and awareness we can return to activity without symptoms.
Find out whether your pelvic floor is the source of your pain or dysfunction by seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist. Start by scheduling an evaluation:
Get In TouchMy pelvic floor session was great! Melia is very professional and I felt very comfortable with her. After going to my primary care doctor multiple times and asking for help with incontinence I was repeatedly told to just “do more Kegel’s”. After hearing Melia speak at a local mom’s fitness group I realized there might be a better answer. And I was right, she actually was able to listen to my specific case and understand my problem which was quite the opposite of “do more Kegel’s”. In a few weeks, with her guidance I was feeling back to normal! And I loved how she checked on me a few days after the session as well.
